American Couple Killed in Athens Building Collapse
A suspected gas leak led to the collapse of a two-story building in Athens, Greece, killing an American couple who were scheduled to check out of their accommodation.
An American couple died in a building collapse in Athens, Greece, on the day they were due to depart, according to officials. The pair were staying in a two-story building that reportedly buckled due to a suspected gas leak.
Four other individuals, including another American couple, remain unaccounted for following the incident. Three other people sustained injuries. The collapse also caused damage to adjacent homes and businesses, scattering debris and broken glass across nearby blocks.
The deceased American couple had planned to check out to catch a 3 p.m. flight from Athens airport on Friday but failed to appear, a police source informed Reuters. Emergency services, including members of the Hellenic Fire Service’s Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK), were observed searching through the rubble.
