A Dallas-to-New York American Airlines flight became a prolonged ordeal for passengers when the plane was forced to divert to Philadelphia due to low fuel, approximately 30 minutes before its scheduled landing.

The incident, documented by passenger Tyler Jackowski in a viral TikTok video, detailed hours of waiting and uncertainty for those on board.

After diverting to Philadelphia, the aircraft remained on the ground for about 45 minutes for refueling. Passengers reported a lack of announcements during this period. Following the refueling, an announcement indicated that while takeoff was planned within the hour, the flight crew might exceed their legally mandated duty hours, known as "timing out."

Despite initial assurances that takeoff would proceed, the plane was later forced to return to the gate after the crew timed out. Passengers were informed that a new pilot was en route from Chicago, expected in 45 minutes.

During the extended wait, passengers inquired about deplaning and arranging their own transportation. They were initially told they could exit the plane, but their checked luggage would not accompany them, potentially leading to delays of days or over a week for baggage retrieval. Those with only carry-on luggage were able to disembark.

Further confusion arose as gate agents began recording the names of passengers choosing to deplane, adding another 30 minutes to the delay. Ultimately, all passengers were instructed to deboard the aircraft. Upon returning to the gate, passengers with checked bags were informed they would need to wait for a new pilot and crew. Updates continued as new flight attendants were assigned, but their location was unknown.

Jackowski's video, captioned "POV: you flew with American Airlines," garnered significant attention online, with many commenters expressing similar frustrations with airline travel. Some users suggested passengers might be entitled to compensation for such lengthy delays. Another commenter noted that flights are typically required to carry enough fuel for the journey plus an additional 30 minutes of flying time.
