American Airlines Flight Returns to Miami After Passenger-Flight Attendant Dispute
A verbal altercation aboard American Airlines Flight 339 prompted the aircraft to return to Miami International Airport, delaying passengers by over four hours.
An American Airlines flight bound for Georgetown, Guyana, returned to Miami shortly after takeoff on October 23, 2026, due to a dispute between a passenger and a flight attendant. The incident forced Flight 339 to turn around and land back at Miami International Airport.
According to reports, the male passenger allegedly approached flight attendants seated at the rear of the Boeing 737 just minutes after the plane had departed Florida. The pilot informed Air Traffic Control that the passenger had spoken to an attendant in a "very threatening manner" while the aircraft was climbing. "They are pretty shaken up," the pilot stated.
Upon the flight's return to Miami, law enforcement from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office met the aircraft. Deputies investigated the incident and stated that "the investigation revealed the passenger and flight attendant were involved in a verbal dispute and no assault was committed."
The disruptive passenger was rebooked on a subsequent flight. The remaining passengers eventually departed approximately four hours later, around 11 p.m., arriving in Georgetown at 3 a.m. local time.
American Airlines issued a statement acknowledging the incident: "American Airlines Flight 339 returned to MIA shortly after takeoff due to a situation with a customer that required attention. Customers will re-depart shortly and we apologize for the inconvenience."
This event follows other recent disruptions on American Airlines flights. In the preceding month, a woman was arrested at Miami International Airport after allegedly stripping naked and engaging in lewd acts. Days earlier, on September 6, a passenger was taken into custody on a separate American Airlines flight from Dallas to Newark after an alleged homophobic and racist rant. In that incident, fellow passengers reportedly resorted to using duct tape to restrain the individual.
