American Airlines Flight Diverts to New York After Multiple Lavatories Fail Mid-Flight

An American Airlines flight bound for Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was forced to divert to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Oct. 6 due to a malfunction affecting multiple lavatories.

American Airlines Flight 37, traveling from Madrid, Spain, to Dallas, experienced an issue with its aircraft's restrooms, according to an airline spokesperson. Six of the plane's eight lavatories stopped working during the transatlantic journey, leaving passengers with only two operational facilities.

Audio recordings from LiveATC.net, a website that streams air traffic control communications, captured a conversation between the flight's cockpit and controllers. When asked about the reason for the diversion, the pilot stated that only two lavatories were functional.

The aircraft landed safely at JFK, where it underwent a maintenance inspection. "The aircraft landed normally and later re-departed for DFW following a maintenance inspection," the airline stated. "We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience."

An aviation expert and retired airline captain, Steven Arroyo, commented that passenger comfort and hygiene were significant factors in the pilot's decision to divert. He also noted that long restroom lines could potentially present security protocol issues and safety concerns for passengers, especially if the seat belt sign is illuminated.

For international flights, diverting to a U.S. gateway airport equipped with customs and immigration services, such as JFK, is standard procedure to allow for maintenance and repairs.

This incident follows other disruptions reported on flights. In one instance, a passenger reported on Reddit about a cross-country flight where one passenger clogged two separate lavatories, leading to concerns about diversion if another restroom failed. Another traveler shared an account of a flight departing with no functioning bathrooms, resulting in the cancellation of beverage service.
