American Airlines is implementing a new policy that will limit complimentary upgrades for elite AAdvantage members on certain domestic routes, a move that has already begun to alienate some of its most loyal customers.

Beginning August 25, elite members flying on nine popular three-cabin domestic routes will no longer be eligible for complimentary upgrades from the main cabin to business class. Instead, their free upgrade will be limited to premium economy seating. The airline stated this change is part of an expansion of premium economy seating across more domestic routes and an effort to standardize the complimentary upgrade process.

For elite members flying on domestic routes that do not feature premium economy, complimentary upgrades from the main cabin to first class will still be available. However, the change significantly impacts travelers on key routes such as those between New York and Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, and Boston and Los Angeles, as well as select flights to Hawaii.

This latest policy update adds to a series of recent changes that have frustrated American Airlines customers. In December, the airline ceased allowing passengers who booked basic economy fares to earn AAdvantage miles or loyalty points toward elite status. More recently, in June, American faced criticism over a policy that could result in passengers who are involuntarily downgraded from first class to economy receiving only a partial refund of the premium fare they initially paid.

Online reactions to the new upgrade policy have been largely negative. One X user described the situation as "yet another reason why loyal, elite customers are feeling alienated by @AmericanAir." Another traveler, who identified themselves as a longtime elite flyer, called the decision "absolutely atrocious and disappointing" and declared their intention to take their business elsewhere, stating, "You just lost a customer."

The restriction on business class upgrades on some of American's longest domestic routes may diminish the perceived value of elite status for frequent flyers. Traditionally, a complimentary upgrade to business class has been one of the more sought-after perks for these passengers, even as its availability has become more scarce.
