American Airlines Cuts Three Routes Amid Geopolitical Unrest and Financial Concerns

American Airlines has canceled flights to three destinations this year, citing geopolitical tensions and financial performance as key factors. The airline has suspended service to Santa Maria (SMX) in California, Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) in Mexico, and Doha's Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Qatar.

The cancellation of the Philadelphia (PHL) to Doha route in March marked the end of American's longest non-stop flight, spanning 6,798 miles and lasting 14.5 hours. This route was discontinued due to instability in the Middle East and underperformance financially. Following American's withdrawal, alliance partner Qatar Airways resumed daily non-stop service between Philadelphia and Doha, becoming the sole carrier on that route.

American's decision to cut routes aligns with broader industry trends influenced by ongoing global conflicts. United Airlines, for example, temporarily froze ticket sales for its Newark to Tel Aviv flights from March to June of this year, as it is a major carrier serving Israel. American Airlines has also extended the cancellation of its flights from New York JFK to Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airport until March 2027, with no service since October 2023 following the attacks on October 7th.

Domestically, American Airlines also ended service to Santa Maria, California, a regional airport, earlier this year. The airline had operated this route to bolster its hub network from its Arizona base but discontinued it due to low demand after less than a year of operation. Similarly, flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to Tijuana International Airport, initiated at the start of 2024, were also canceled due to insufficient passenger uptake. This 290-mile route was American's shortest.

Despite these cancellations, American Airlines is planning to expand its international network in 2027, introducing seven new routes. Philadelphia is slated to gain new international destinations, including Porto, Portugal, and Vienna, Austria. Service to Reykjavik, Iceland, is also set to resume after a hiatus since 2019.
