American Airlines Cuts Service to Three Cities Citing Route Performance

American Airlines has ended service to three destinations this year – Santa Maria, California; Tijuana, Mexico; and Doha, Qatar – due to underperformance and network adjustments. These cuts have resulted in reduced flight choices for travelers in those areas.

The Santa Maria Public Airport is now without service from a major U.S. legacy carrier, with Allegiant Air being the sole airline operating commercial flights to Las Vegas. American Airlines, through its American Eagle brand and a partnership with SkyWest Airlines, had previously served Santa Maria but discontinued the route on May 7, citing that the flights did not meet performance expectations.

Similarly, Tijuana International Airport has lost its only nonstop route operated by a U.S. airline. American Airlines ended its service to Tijuana in August, also attributing the decision to the route failing to meet performance expectations as part of an optimization of its network and fleet.

In June, American Airlines also ceased its Philadelphia-to-Doha route. The airline had previously suspended this service due to regional hostilities and ultimately discontinued it after the route failed to meet performance expectations. Qatar Airways has since resumed nonstop service between Philadelphia and Doha.

An aviation safety expert, Steven Arroyo, noted that route cancellations are a routine aspect of the airline industry. "If airlines are consistently not making money on a route, they're going to pull out, and it happens all the time," Arroyo told Fox News Digital. "It's part of the economic reality of running an airline efficiently."

Arroyo advised travelers to monitor their planned routes and ticket prices closely, conduct research before booking, and consider backup arrangements, particularly for international travel. "Try to lock in those prices or make alternative plans if it looks like flights may be canceled on your route," he said.
