AMC+ has released "Yaga," an eight-episode Canadian mystery-horror series adapted from a play by Kat Sandler. The series stars Hudson Williams in a dual role as twins Henry and his look-alike roommate, who is also named Henry. Williams previously starred in "Heated Rivalry."

The narrative unfolds in the isolated island community of Whittock, British Columbia, where Henry Park, an heir to a local fishing dynasty, has gone missing. While local Sergeant Carson (Clark Backo) initially suspects Henry may have simply left town, the arrival of brash private investigator Charlie Rapp (Noah Reid), hired by the Park family, suggests a more concerning situation. Rapp, hired by the Park family, begins investigating Henry's disappearance.

The series opens with an unsettling voiceover and visual cues, including dark waters and glowing forest fires, hinting at something sinister beneath the surface of the seemingly peaceful community. Mysterious references to chicken parts and an unseen speaker contribute to the eerie atmosphere.

As Rapp and Sergeant Carson collaborate, their investigation delves into the hidden lives of Whittock's residents, many of whom appear to know more than they are revealing. The presence of Dr. Katherine Hargrove, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, adds another layer of intrigue, with her interactions hinting at a complex and potentially seductive relationship with the missing Henry.

The series draws comparisons to "Sterling Point" for its scenic, isolated setting and to "Yellowjackets" for its exploration of secrets among its female characters and its embrace of the grotesque. Critics have noted the show's ability to foster a sense of unease and paranoia, with the tagline "Someone is watching you" proving apt.

"Yaga" is noted for its blend of conventional mystery elements with supernatural undertones, drawing on Eastern European folk tales. The review suggests that the series aims to move beyond superficial mystery tropes to explore darker, more supernatural realities. The performance of Carrie-Anne Moss has been highlighted as a standout element.

The series does not shy away from adult themes, with Rapp engaging in a romantic encounter shortly after arriving on the island. The first episode concludes with a return of the mysterious voiceover and a suspenseful revelation concerning Rapp's communications.

"Yaga" is available for streaming on AMC+.
