Amazon is eliminating approximately 150 positions across its Northern California offices, with affected employees in Sunnyvale and San Francisco slated to have October 20 as their final day. The company filed notice with the Employment Development Department on August 28, detailing the elimination of 70 jobs at its Sunnyvale location and 78 positions at its Bush Street office in San Francisco.
This latest round of job cuts is part of a broader effort by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy to streamline management structures and reduce bureaucracy. Since October 2025, the company has reduced its corporate workforce by roughly 30,000 employees through two major layoff phases.
In January 2026, Amazon laid off approximately 135 corporate employees in New York City, followed by another 165 workers in the state. These reductions come amid reports that Amazon is significantly increasing its investment in artificial intelligence and data centers. Software engineer Patrick Schloesser noted in June that the company reportedly plans to spend $200 billion on capital expenditures this year, with a substantial portion allocated to AI and data centers.
In related corporate news, Uber announced a significant restructuring on Wednesday, eliminating about 3,300 corporate roles, which represents roughly 10% of its global staff. The restructuring primarily targets management ranks, aiming to reduce management positions by 20% and consolidate small teams. Uber stated that its drivers and couriers, classified as independent contractors, are not affected by these layoffs.
