Amazon Reportedly in Talks to Sponsor Prince Harry's Invictus Games
A significant sponsorship deal with Amazon could provide a crucial financial boost for the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, which aims to raise £20 million.
Amazon is reportedly close to finalizing a substantial sponsorship agreement for Prince Harry's Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, a move that could significantly bolster the event's finances and potentially involve appearances from Meghan Markle.
The proposed deal from Jeff Bezos's company is seen as a major boost for the Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry. The event, scheduled to take place in Birmingham from July 10 to July 17, 2027, requires an estimated £20 million to cover its costs. The multi-sport competition will host 550 wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans, along with their families, from 25 nations.
This potential sponsorship comes as a welcome development after aircraft manufacturer Boeing, a previous major supporter, did not renew its backing after the last Invictus Games. Sources familiar with the negotiations suggest Amazon has expressed a desire to become involved, citing their existing support for veterans through employment programs and a recognition of the games' significant undertaking and expense.
The reported interest from Amazon, a major rival to Netflix, is also notable given Netflix's previous involvement in lifestyle programs featuring the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. "The deal would be a shot in the arm for Invictus and Harry... Amazon wanted to get involved," one source told The Sun. "The games are a big undertaking and expensive. And it's interesting Amazon are Netflix's big rival."
The Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 is organized by an independent UK-based charity, established to manage the event in Birmingham. The broader Invictus Games Foundation, also a UK charity, governs the delivery of the games globally.
A spokesperson for Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 expressed optimism about developing partnerships. "We've already announced some great partners and look forward to welcoming more who share our ambition for the Games in the months ahead," the spokesperson stated. "Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 is supported through a combination of UK Government underwriting, commercial partnerships, charitable support and in-kind contributions and will continue to secure additional income as we move towards the Games."
The Invictus Games, first held in 2014, features adaptive sports designed to support the recovery and resilience of wounded, injured, and sick military veterans. The 2027 event in Birmingham will showcase 12 adaptive sports.
