Amazon Prime Faces Backlash for 'Puff Piece' Deshaun Watson Interview
NFL fans criticize the streaming service for an interview that skirted sexual misconduct allegations against the Cleveland Browns quarterback.
Amazon Prime is facing criticism from NFL fans who argue that an exclusive interview with Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson amounted to a "puff piece" designed to manage his public image. The interview, which aired before Thursday night's game, has been called out for not thoroughly addressing the sexual misconduct allegations that previously faced Watson.
Watson was accused by 24 massage therapists of sexual misconduct, allegations he has denied, stating any sexual encounters were consensual. While not criminally prosecuted, he was suspended by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy. He is currently playing on a $230 million contract with the Browns.
During the interview with Taylor Rooks, the allegations were only briefly mentioned as part of his "unresolved past" upon arriving in Cleveland. Rooks' questions focused on Watson's feelings about being booed by some Browns fans, to which he responded that while life isn't always fair, he doesn't consider the booing fair.
Social media users expressed disappointment, with many labeling the interview a "PR run" and criticizing the lack of direct questioning about the accusations. Critics argued that framing the issue as merely "violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy" minimized the seriousness of the allegations and the women who came forward. Some viewers also directed criticism at Rooks for her line of questioning.
In the game that followed the interview, Watson led the Browns to a 27-24 victory, improving their season record to 3-1. He was cheered off the field following the win.
