Amazon Halloween Witch With Star of David on Spell Book Sparks Antisemitic Outrage

Amazon is facing backlash for selling a life-sized animatronic Halloween witch that features a Star of David on its spell book, a detail that critics say evokes the antisemitic trope of Jews practicing witchcraft. The $219 decoration, sold by Collective Home on Amazon's platform, has drawn sharp condemnation from Jewish community leaders and watchdogs.

One Brooklyn woman who purchased the decoration for her front lawn expressed horror upon learning about the symbolism. "I'm very upset, this is horrible," she told The Post, emphasizing her support for Israel and Jewish people and stating she had not closely examined the decoration. "I should take it up with Amazon."

Moshe Spern, president of the United Jewish Teachers group, called the item "the oldest antisemitic smear – Jews are sorcerers or practice witchcraft." He added, "This trope is now repackaged as Halloween décor and shipped by the biggest retailer on earth. Somebody at Amazon either didn’t notice or didn’t care."

The watchdog group StopAntisemitism highlighted the decoration as part of a pattern of problematic Jewish imagery appearing in consumer products. They noted that a Dr. Evil costume on Amazon also features a Star of David on the character's signature pinky ring, replacing the original design which bore an 'E' and a crest.

"With antisemitism skyrocketing, it is disturbing to see Jewish symbols quietly inserted into Halloween costumes," said Liora Rez, founder and executive director of StopAntisemitism. "These changes may be presented as small design details, but they evoke harmful stereotypes and can normalize antisemitism. Amazon must take accountability for the products it sells to consumers, especially when they are marketed for a holiday so closely associated with children. Amazon should remove these items immediately."

This controversy follows a similar incident where a CVS Barbie package was accused of containing Nazi symbolism, leading to public outcry. The Post has reached out to Amazon for comment regarding the witch decoration.
