Amanda Seyfried Faces Backlash Over Elizabeth Holmes Documentary Appearance

Amanda Seyfried has drawn criticism from viewers following her participation in the recent documentary "You Can See Everything," which chronicles the final days of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes before she reported to prison. The documentary, released on October 16, features Seyfried interacting with host Nathan Fielder as they recreate conversations Holmes had prior to her incarceration.

Seyfried, who previously portrayed Holmes in the Hulu series "The Dropout," revisited her connection to the disgraced Theranos CEO. In "You Can See Everything," Seyfried's evolving perspective on Holmes, including her personal life and relationship with Billy Evans, is explored. During their interactions, Seyfried grappled with her growing sympathy for Holmes, even as Holmes herself challenged Seyfried's portrayal in "The Dropout."

This dynamic prompted a strong reaction from some viewers. Online commentary accused Seyfried of hypocrisy and shifting her stance when the focus turned to her own role in depicting the Theranos scandal. One X user described Seyfried's behavior as "truly gross," suggesting she initially defended Holmes as a victim of manipulation before deflecting and accusing Fielder of covering for Holmes.

Other critics echoed this sentiment, with one stating that Seyfried's actions reinforced a negative impression of the actress and that her "posturing" was hypocritical. Another viewer found Seyfried's apparent "true colors" and "hypocrisy" to be a "cathartic feeling."

However, not all viewers agreed with the criticism. Some defended Seyfried, arguing that her changing opinions reflected the documentary's intended message about the evolving perceptions of Holmes. Supporters suggested that Seyfried's internal reckoning with the consequences of her actions, even when she felt she had done nothing wrong, was a key element of the film.

One user pointed out that both Seyfried and Fielder, along with the audience, changed their opinions of Holmes throughout the documentary, asserting that this evolution was "the literal point."

Elizabeth Holmes was convicted in January 2022 on four federal fraud charges for misleading investors about her company's technology. She was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison and began her sentence on May 30, 2023, at Federal Prison Camp Bryan.

"You Can See Everything" delves into Holmes' efforts to manage her public image following the collapse of Theranos, examining her attempts to navigate life after the scandal and the discrepancy between her self-perception and public perception.
