Amanda Seyfried Explains Why She Turned Down Major Marvel Role
The actress revealed her concerns about "Guardians of the Galaxy" potentially harming her career.
Amanda Seyfried has revealed that she declined the role of Gamora in Marvel's 2014 blockbuster "Guardians of the Galaxy" due to concerns that the project could damage her career.
Seyfried, now 40, shared her reasoning during a Q&A session with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, stating that she initially believed the film would not be a success. "I think turning down ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was just so obvious to me at the time,” she said. “I’m like, ‘This is not going to be a hit.'"
Her reservations stemmed from the unconventional premise of the film, which featured a talking tree voiced by Vin Diesel and a raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper. "And also they’re all in space,” she explained. “And I was just like, ‘This will ruin my career if this is bad. And there’s a high chance that this could be bad.'"
Despite her initial assessment, Seyfried acknowledged that she was incorrect about the film's commercial performance. However, she maintained that she does not regret her decision. Seyfried cited her desire to make projects for herself and her family, and also expressed a reluctance to spend extensive time in makeup trailers. She further elaborated on her discomfort with the physical demands of such productions, stating, “I just can’t sit still anyway. I really don’t like stunts, and I don’t like heights, and I don’t like pretending the entire world. I need something to hold on to.”
The role of Gamora ultimately went to Zoe Saldaña. "Guardians of the Galaxy" went on to become a major financial success, grossing over $700 million worldwide. The film spawned two sequels, with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" in 2023 earning more than $845 million globally. The characters also appeared in several other Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," which each surpassed $2 billion at the box office.
