Amanda Peet Describes Subtle Symptom Preceding Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Actress Amanda Peet, 54, has shared details about a subtle bodily change she experienced prior to her breast cancer diagnosis last year. Speaking on the Today show, Peet described noticing a 'weird' area of skin on her breast that felt atypical.

"It just didn't feel like normal skin, but it wasn't the frozen pea that everybody talks about," Peet stated. She recounted an initial visit to her doctor, which resulted in an MRI and being told she had a clean bill of health, although doctors were monitoring the area. Approximately six months later, during a routine scan, her physician identified a concerning finding on the ultrasound.

Peet, married to "Game of Thrones" co-creator David Benioff, was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma, the second most common type of breast cancer. This form of cancer originates in the milk-producing glands, or lobules, and has the potential to spread to surrounding tissues and lymph nodes. Unlike the more common ductal breast cancer, lobular carcinoma is less likely to present as a palpable lump.

She recalled the moment of receiving the diagnosis, noting her doctor's unusual silence on the phone and the subsequent biopsy. Peet became more concerned when her doctor personally transported the sample to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on a Friday evening for expedited results.

"I'll never forget that moment," she said, describing the anxiety that followed, especially as she received a "slow drip of information" regarding treatment options. The process, she noted, was a "basic nightmare" for someone with an anxious disposition.

Following a lumpectomy and radiation treatment, Peet received her first clear scan in January. Reflecting on her experience, she expressed gratitude for the early detection, stating, "I think about how lucky I was in so many ways."
