Alonso Urges Chelsea to Maintain Discipline Against Tottenham
Manager Xabi Alonso emphasizes emotional control and discipline ahead of the derby match with Tottenham Hotspur, aiming to prevent a repeat of last season's disciplinary issues.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has instructed his players to exercise restraint and maintain their improved disciplinary record as they prepare to face rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The team is focused on avoiding the rash of red cards that plagued them last season, when they received six in all competitions between August and October, including one for then-manager Enzo Maresca.
Alonso identified the need for better emotional control and game management as a key area for improvement upon his arrival. "For me this is a fundamental part of the game, to have that emotional control, to deal with all this," Alonso stated. "The momentum is coming, we keep calm, I don't lose my head and I don't get stupid yellow cards or make stupid penalties. You need to prepare for football to have better control of that."
The squad has seen changes since last season, with players like Liam Delap, Robert Sanchez, and Trevoh Chalobah, who received red cards, no longer with the club. Alonso pointed to the signing of midfielder Jordan Henderson as a contributing factor to the team's enhanced composure. Henderson, nearing a fourth consecutive full match, is credited by Alonso with bringing essential experience and composure, particularly during critical moments in a game.
Alonso acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining discipline in the Premier League, especially in high-intensity derby matches. "It is really difficult," he conceded. "You know that if you concede one, the energy is coming, and you need to control the momentum. You can have a mental preparation. You need to have composure to deal with those moments."
Looking ahead to the match, Alonso anticipates a passionate atmosphere but stressed the importance of channeling that energy constructively. "We are expecting a good atmosphere, electric, with good energy, knowing that in a derby this passion is really in the air in the stadium. We need to use it in a proper way because this is all about those games where you feel that excitement."
In goal, 21-year-old Mike Penders is set to make his Premier League debut with Emiliano Martinez sidelined. Alonso expressed confidence in Penders, drawing a comparison to former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, whom Alonso contacted for insights on the young Belgian. "Thibaut even said himself that he could see resemblances with Mike," Alonso shared.
