Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that Enzo Fernandez was omitted from the squad for the Carabao Cup match against Luton Town after a private conversation between the two. Alonso stated that the decision was made because he needed players with the 'desire to play' and who were in the best condition to compete.
"We talked and we decided it was better not to be part of the squad," Alonso said. "He is a top player."
Fernandez's absence from the matchday selection fueled speculation of a potential £120 million transfer to Manchester City. However, Chelsea sources indicated that no formal offer had been received as of Thursday night.
While Chelsea awaits any formal approach from Manchester City, the club is reportedly exploring potential replacements. Monaco's Lamine Camara, 22, is understood to be under active consideration should Fernandez depart.
Alonso acknowledged the need to be prepared for eventualities in the transfer market. "We want to be ready always," he commented when asked about needing a replacement. "We are quite close to the plan we had. We will see where we finish... the team is coming together."
In other team news, the club may need to secure a new goalkeeper by Friday's deadline if Emiliano Martinez is to be eligible for Sunday's match against Brighton. Otherwise, Robert Sanchez or Mike Penders would be considered. Sanchez has recently been subject to criticism for perceived errors in previous matches.
