Alonso Defends Palmer's Withdrawal, Dismisses Tuchel's Criticism

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has defended the club's decision to manage Cole Palmer's fitness during the international break, directly refuting criticism from Thomas Tuchel.

Alonso confirmed that Palmer's withdrawal from England duty was due to a recurring groin issue, a problem that has previously affected the player. However, Alonso also stated that Palmer is now fit and available for Chelsea's upcoming match against Bournemouth.

Tuchel had previously voiced his displeasure with Palmer's absence from the England squad, suggesting the player "misses way too many camps" and that it represented "another missed opportunity."

Alonso countered this by emphasizing the club's cautious approach, citing other players who have sustained injuries while on international duty. "We were cautious, and he was cautious as well, he wanted to be," Alonso said of Palmer. "He wouldn't have played the way he wants to play. It's sometimes better to take a step back and wait until you feel better and do it the right way."

Chelsea allowed Palmer the first two weeks of the international break to rest before reintegrating him into training in preparation for the Bournemouth fixture.

When asked about Palmer's potential reaction to Tuchel's comments, Alonso stated, "I don't know. He's been focused on training. He wants to feel good. He's still young in his career. He has been there, and I'm sure when he feels good and is playing good, he will be back."

Alonso also provided an update on other returning players, confirming that Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro, Reece James, and Marco Palestra are all available for the match. Caicedo's return, in particular, is seen as a significant boost, given Chelsea's defensive struggles in his absence. The team has conceded 12 goals in their last five games.

Caicedo participated in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Portsmouth during the break, although Palmer, Pedro, and James did not feature in that fixture. All are, however, in contention to play against Bournemouth.

Alonso expressed his pleasure at Caicedo's return, noting, "We are all happier when we see Moi on the pitch. Not just myself, but his team-mates, they are happier. Everyone loves Moi because of how generous he is with his effort, how much he helps each of his team-mates, how important he is. Everyone is really happy."

Regarding external commentary, such as Piers Morgan's criticism of Palmer, Alonso stated, "I don't know the comment and I don't know the guy."
