The Buffalo Bills opened their season with a familiar pattern: a dominant performance from quarterback Josh Allen was once again needed to compensate for defensive struggles, despite a change in offensive coordinators. The Bills secured a 36-31 win against the Houston Texans in a game that featured eight lead changes and four in the final quarter.
Allen was instrumental in the victory, throwing two touchdown passes and adding two more on the ground. This marked his 25th career outing with four total touchdowns. He improved his record to 24-8 when passing for over 300 yards and engineered his 26th game-winning drive.
However, Allen's near one-man offensive effort underscored the defense's deficiencies, a recurring issue that contributed to the Bills' decision to fire head coach Sean McDermott after a playoff loss last season. While the defense ultimately sealed the win with Greg Rousseau's strip-sack of Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud in the closing seconds, the unit showed significant room for improvement.
The Bills' defense allowed 124 rushing yards, a mark they exceeded eight times last season. They also struggled on third downs, allowing the Texans to convert 7 of 16 opportunities, including four conversions on third downs of 8 yards or longer. Houston also succeeded on both of their fourth-down attempts. The Texans scored on four of their five drives inside the Buffalo 20-yard line. Buffalo surrendered 26 first downs, the most in a game since December 2024.
First-year defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard acknowledged the team's struggles, stating, "It did feel like Week 1, when things started to unravel a little bit at times or feel a little bit off, I thought our guys looked around like they weren’t sure what the answer should be." He attributed some of the early season issues to the introduction of four new defensive starters and a switch to a three-lineman, four-linebacker system.
Despite the uneven performance, Leonhard expressed confidence in the unit's trajectory, saying, "We’re closer than it looked. And I’m excited for where we’re going."
The Bills face a quick turnaround as they prepare to host the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. In their last meeting in December 2024, the Bills won 48-42, with the Lions scoring touchdowns on their final four possessions.
Offensively, the Bills were efficient, scoring 36 points on just 52 snaps. Two touchdown drives began from their own 4-yard line. Wide receiver D.J. Moore, acquired in the offseason, made an impact with five catches for 100 yards and drew a 46-yard pass interference penalty that set up a touchdown.
Running back Ray Davis saw limited action, playing only five offensive snaps, while practice squad call-up Frank Gore Jr. played 11, primarily in pass-blocking situations.
Injury updates included linebacker Terrel Bernard, who was limited in practice Monday with a calf injury. Safety Cole Bishop (knee/groin) and edge rusher Bradley Chubb (thumb) fully participated in practice.
