San Diego officials have arraigned Genaro Lopez, 54, an alleged drug lord accused of utilizing a sophisticated network of underground tunnels to transport illicit cargo. Lopez was apprehended in March after evading authorities for several years.

The investigation gained traction following a 2021 drug bust where police intercepted three cars leaving a Chula Vista stash house. During this operation, authorities seized 241 kilograms of cocaine, eight firearms including two ghost guns, ammunition, high-capacity magazines, and $40,000 in cash. Four individuals identified as Lopez's employees were arrested and subsequently charged and sentenced, but Lopez himself was not present at the time.

Approximately one year later, in 2022, law enforcement discovered another cross-border tunnel originating from a stash house in National City. This discovery occurred after four vehicles were stopped leaving the location. The subsequent seizure included nearly 800 kilograms of cocaine, 74.8 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 1.6 kilograms of fentanyl.

The tunnel found in 2022 was approximately 1,744 feet long, 61 feet deep, and 4 feet in diameter. It was equipped with ventilation, electricity, and a rail system, indicating a high level of sophistication. Six individuals were apprehended at this site; five have since pleaded guilty and been sentenced, while one remains at large as a fugitive.

This operation was reminiscent of another cross-border tunnel discovered previously, which ran from Tijuana to a hidden entrance concealed within a fake retail store in Otay Mesa. This earlier tunnel was described as "sophisticated," featuring electricity and ventilation, and measured about 1,933 feet in length, 55 feet deep, and 4.5 feet in height, with reinforced walls.

Investigators had been monitoring the fake store for months, observing suspicious activity and minimal customer traffic before uncovering the tunnel. Lopez is scheduled to appear in court to face charges including conspiracy to distribute and import controlled substances. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence in prison.
