All Incumbent Regional Heads Re-elected in Slovakia

All eight regional heads in Slovakia have been reelected, with final results released on Sunday.

Incumbents backed by populist Prime Minister Robert Fico's ruling coalition secured two of the regional leadership positions in Saturday's vote. Opposition parties supporting a pro-Western stance won four regions, while independent candidates retained the remaining two.

In the eastern Prešov region, Milan Majerský, the head of the opposition Christian Democrats, won with over 48% of the vote. He defeated a candidate from the far-right Republic party, which is currently the third most popular party in Slovakia according to polls, and garnered 35% of the vote.

Slovakia, a nation of 5.4 million, is a member of the European Union and NATO. The country is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections next year.

Separately, Matúš Vallo was reelected for a third term as mayor of the capital, Bratislava, in an election traditionally dominated by independent candidates.
