All 50 States Join Trump's 'Most Favored Nations' Drug Pricing Initiative for Medicaid

President Trump announced Friday that all 50 states, along with Puerto Rico and Washington D.C., have opted into his "most favored nations" drug-price initiative, aiming to reduce prescription costs for Medicaid recipients.
The initiative, which Trump described as "GENEROUS," involves 26 major pharmaceutical companies agreeing to price certain drugs for federal agencies at rates comparable to those paid in eight other high-income nations, including Canada, Germany, and Japan.
"They all succumbed to the dollar," Trump stated regarding the states' participation. He asserted that this move would result in significant cost savings for states, potentially billions of dollars annually, allowing them to reinvest in healthcare services.
A White House Council of Economic Advisers estimate projects that states could save $64 billion on Medicaid drug costs over the next decade. The broader initiative is estimated to save the government $529 billion over the same period. The agreement also includes provisions for discounts on certain drugs for uninsured Americans through the new "TrumpRx" platform.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator for Medicare and Medicaid, commented that the program would "rescue state budgets," noting that current pharmaceutical spending was diverting funds from other essential services like education and infrastructure.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed his support, framing the initiative as aligning with long-standing Democratic party priorities. He stated, "Every nation is judged based upon how it cares for the poorest members of society," and highlighted President Trump's achievement in lowering poverty levels during his term, now adding this initiative as another benefit for vulnerable populations.
Trump suggested that the initiative faced initial resistance from some states but ultimately proved beneficial enough for them to join. He indicated that the cost savings could reach 70% to 90% for some drugs.
