Alister Smart, an original presenter on the iconic Australian children's television program Play School, died last month at the age of 90. Smart passed away on September 9 at his home in East Gippsland, Victoria, with news of his death emerging recently.

Smart was one of the inaugural presenters when Play School first aired in 1966 and continued with the program for more than 20 years, until 1989. The ABC Kids Community group confirmed his passing in a social media statement, noting that he "appeared in the very first episode."

Known for his energetic and upbeat on-screen presence, Smart shared the screen with other prominent Play School presenters throughout his tenure, including Noni Hazlehurst, Don Spencer, John Hamblin, and Lorraine Bayly.

Beyond his work on the children's show, Smart had a notable career as an actor and director in Australian television. His acting credits include appearances in popular series such as Skippy, The Sullivans, and Cop Shop. He also directed episodes of well-known shows like Neighbours, Blue Heelers, and A Country Practice.

Fans took to social media to express their sadness and pay tribute to the veteran performer. Comments remembered him as a favorite presenter and a "legend" who entertained a generation.

Alister Smart is survived by his wife, Margery.
