Alison Hammond Suffers Wrist Injury Weeks After Panic Attack on Air
The television presenter revealed a fall caused by a decorative rock has left her with a wrist injury, following a recent on-air panic attack.
Alison Hammond, the 51-year-old presenter, has revealed she injured her wrist after a fall. The incident occurred weeks after she experienced a panic attack live on air, leading her to briefly leave the This Morning set. Hammond appeared on the show wearing a wrist support, explaining to co-host Dermot O'Leary that she tripped over a decorative rock while filming a TikTok video with a friend. She admitted she was wearing sunglasses and didn't see the rock.
"I was doing a little TikTok with my friend and basically there was a rock in the middle of the floor and I didn't see it because I had sunglasses on... I didn't have my glasses on, didn't see the rock.. fell over the rock," Hammond explained. O'Leary commented that he had seen a video of the fall and described it as a "proper plant."
Despite the injury, Hammond maintained her characteristic upbeat demeanor, breaking into a dance to commence the show. "I'm a little bit injured.. but I've got it all strapped up. But I think it looks sick!" she said.
This latest incident follows a distressing episode on This Morning the previous week. Hammond had to leave the show midway through an episode after experiencing what she initially feared was a heart attack. She was seen clutching her chest and struggling to breathe before being taken to the hospital for tests.
Upon her return to the show the following Friday, Hammond confirmed the event was a panic attack, describing it as "the scariest thing I've ever been through." She joked to viewers, "if she didn't come back to the show today, she might never return at all."
Discussing the panic attack, Hammond shared her surreal experience, comparing it to entering "the upside down world" from the show Stranger Things. "I couldn't grasp my breath, and it was a panic attack. And you know, I feel guilty that I didn't have a heart condition or anything a little bit because it was so much," she stated. She recounted running off set due to her inability to catch her breath, a reaction she would not normally have. "I genuinely thought I was having a heart attack. I'm so glad I'm here. I feel so grateful. I feel so thankful to God, to everything in life. I'm so happy that I'm here, and I'm so happy to see you. You were absolutely wonderful."
Hammond added that the experience has caused her to view life differently and to "take stock" and "look after my health."
During her return, Hammond and O'Leary were joined by Dr. Sian Williams to discuss panic attacks. Dr. Williams explained that panic attacks are characterized by a rush of adrenaline and cortisol, the stress hormone. She praised Hammond for normalizing the experience by naming it and returning to work, emphasizing the importance of this for individuals, particularly women, who might otherwise avoid situations for fear of recurrence.
Hammond admitted to feeling anxious about returning to the show but felt it was necessary to do so promptly. "I was anxious about coming back, but I thought if I don't come back today, probably wouldn't come back. I don't think I'd come back because then I would have made a thing that it's This Morning that is causing the panic, but it can happen anywhere. It can happen. It comes in ebbs and flows," she said.
