Singer Alicia Keys and her husband, rapper Swizz Beatz, have offered a rare glimpse into their 16-year marriage, revealing their deliberate strategy to maintain a conflict-free relationship. In a joint interview with Vogue Italia, the couple, married since 2010, shared that they have never engaged in arguments and prioritize open communication.
Swizz Beatz stated that he and Keys vowed to create a different home environment than the ones they grew up in, where their parents frequently raised their voices. "We never argued, we never raised our voices," he explained. "And if we have different opinions, we talk about it like adults, over dinner." He added that both he and Keys understand the emotional impact of such environments on children. "Our children grow up with a completely different energy and it's one of the things we're most proud of."
Keys, 45, and Beatz, 48, are parents to sons Egypt, 16, and Genesis, 11. Keys shared that her approach to family life involves disconnecting from her phone to engage in activities like board games and ping pong with their children, emphasizing the importance of living in the moment. "For me, simplicity is the key to everything: walking on the grass, being under the trees, listening to a good record," she said. "We have a vital need for simplicity that we too often forget."
Despite their busy schedules, the couple also makes time for monthly date nights. Keys described her husband as "one of her safest places in the world."
Keys has previously spoken about her upbringing in Hell's Kitchen, New York, and the impact of her father's absence. She recounted writing a letter to her father at age 13, expressing her anger and asking him to stay out of her life. Her father, Craig Cook, has acknowledged his immaturity at the time of her birth in 1981 and his inability to handle the responsibility of fatherhood.
The two reconciled during the process of Keys developing her 2024 Broadway show, "Hell's Kitchen," which was partly inspired by her life experiences.
The couple also collaborated on Keys' upcoming album, "Lovers Rose," scheduled for release in 2027.
The full interview appears in the November issue of Vogue Italia.
