Alfie Barbeary Embraces Individuality as He Joins Saracens
The larger-than-life rugby player, known as 'Captain Underpants', discusses his move from Bath and his philosophy on self-expression and career progression.
Alfie Barbeary, a notable figure in the rugby world often dubbed 'Captain Underpants,' has joined Saracens following his departure from Bath. Barbeary, known for his flamboyant personality and distinctive style, expressed his philosophy on authenticity and career moves, stating, "No one should hide who they are. I'm just being me and if I can make money off that, then great!"
Barbeary's move comes after a period at Bath where he became a cult hero. The decision to leave was framed as a business one. "Rugby's a business. You might have an emotional connection to a club, but you’ve got to be able to see it that way too," Barbeary commented on Bath's decision to let him go.
During his time at Bath, Barbeary was famous for leading the club's celebrations after they won three trophies in 2025, often wearing minimal clothing, which contributed to his 'Captain Underpants' nickname.
He previously played for Wasps before the club entered administration.
Barbeary made his debut for Saracens in their opening game of the new season against Leicester, which the team won. Looking ahead, his aspirations include representing England. "Obviously, you want to play for England," Barbeary said. "I’ve just got to do my best and perform with Saracens. That’s the first step and after that, what will be will be."
