Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Launches Upstate Tour Amid 2028 Presidential Speculation

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has begun an upstate New York voter outreach tour, a move that has fueled speculation about a potential presidential run in 2028. The tour, which includes stops in Buffalo, Syracuse, and Ithaca, is designed to rally supporters ahead of the midterm elections.

Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to join Ocasio-Cortez for parts of the tour, aiming to generate momentum for the upcoming election cycle. "I think she brings a lot of energy to the process, engages young people in particular," Hochul stated in an interview with WNYC. "I’ve encouraged this. I have asked her and others to go statewide to create the momentum we need, the energy around this next election. So I think she’ll be very well-received."

Ocasio-Cortez's itinerary includes speaking engagements and an "inactive voter training" session. Her team also announced a $300,000 contribution to state Democrats. The congresswoman recently commented to The New York Times that 2028 would be a critical election year for her, stating she would not seek re-election if she lost bids for her House seat, a Senate position, or the presidency.

The chosen locations for the tour, including Buffalo and Syracuse, have recently elected members associated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to local and state positions. Ithaca, home to Cornell University, is in Tompkins County, which historically supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary.

While Ocasio-Cortez has not formally announced a presidential campaign, the tour and her recent statements have drawn attention from political observers and state Republican leaders. State Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra criticized the tour, posting on X, "We warned you about NYC socialism spreading upstate. Turns out it’s Kathy Hochul driving the bus."

Erie County Republican Chairman Michael Kracker also voiced opposition, stating, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is coming to Erie County to establish herself as the true leader of the New York Democratic Party, and local Democrats are falling in line, embracing her extreme socialist agenda without question."

Former Golden Gloves boxing champion Joe "Baby Joe" Mesi, a lifelong Democrat, expressed concern that Ocasio-Cortez does not represent his views or the community he grew up in. "The party I know fights for working people, not for radical politics that hurt them," Mesi said.
