Speculation is mounting regarding a potential split between Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her longtime fiancé, Riley Roberts, following the congresswoman's public announcement this week that she is freezing her eggs.

The "Squad" star, 36, who became engaged to Roberts in April 2022, has been observed in recent months without her engagement ring. The ring was notably absent in May when the couple was photographed together in Manhattan. When questioned by a reporter about her decision to freeze her eggs and her fiancé's support, Ocasio-Cortez stated, "All of my loved ones have been very supportive."

Rumors of a breakup have circulated within Democratic party circles, with some insiders suggesting her political ambitions, including potential runs for higher office, may be a factor. Ocasio-Cortez has been considered a potential frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 or a U.S. Senate seat.

Additional reports indicate that Ocasio-Cortez has not worn an engagement ring for some time. Furthermore, Roberts has not appeared on the congresswoman's House financial disclosures for several years, with his last listing being for an August 2022 trip to Italy. For that trip, Ocasio-Cortez referred to him as a "spouse" to enable the coverage of food and lodging expenses as gifts.

During their appearance at the Met Gala, where Ocasio-Cortez wore a dress with the slogan "Tax the Rich," Roberts also received a complimentary ticket. This designation as "spouse" for event access drew scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee. In a report issued last year, investigators noted that Roberts, while listed as a "spouse" for gift and travel purposes, was not subjected to the same financial disclosures as a legally married individual.

Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts were together during her successful 2018 campaign against incumbent Joseph Crowley, which led to her becoming the youngest person elected to Congress. The couple became engaged during a trip to Puerto Rico but had not yet set a wedding date.

Critics have speculated that Ocasio-Cortez may have delayed a wedding to avoid potential scrutiny over Roberts' finances, which would be subject to House disclosure requirements after marriage.

Neither Ocasio-Cortez nor Roberts have responded to requests for comment. Roberts has not been featured in recent social media posts by Ocasio-Cortez, although he appeared in a Christmas post from 2021 and another shortly thereafter. On Monday, Ocasio-Cortez posted about a strength training session and a subsequent train journey to New York for an ultrasound, without mentioning Roberts.

The couple dated in college, separated briefly, and reconnected around 2015. Roberts previously had an official House email address granting him access to her calendar.

In a 2018 interview with GQ, Ocasio-Cortez discussed her initial reservations about entering an interracial relationship and her perception that some men struggle with a partner's success. However, she also described Roberts at the time as "so supportive and willing and deeply engaging."

After confirming her engagement in 2022, Ocasio-Cortez stated that she and Roberts were "taking some space to savor this time before diving into planning" for a wedding. A Democratic operative, recalling past encounters with the couple, described Roberts as a less dynamic figure in public settings compared to Ocasio-Cortez, noting he rarely spoke at events.
