Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has announced the completion of her egg-freezing journey, documenting the final egg retrieval day on social media and vowing to provide further updates on her recovery process. The 36-year-old New York congresswoman shared details of the final day of the two-week procedure in a series of posts on Saturday.
Ocasio-Cortez described the egg retrieval day, which began early in the morning, stating that she used skincare eye masks for the procedure, which she found to be "a really nice way to bring some lightness to this process." Following the procedure, she was informed of the final count of retrieved eggs and their maturity but stated she would not be sharing specific numbers out of respect for different fertility and family journeys. Instead, she encouraged individuals to focus on their specific bodily facts and knowledge of reproductive systems, as shared by licensed fertility specialists.
Recalling the procedure, Ocasio-Cortez explained her doctor's description of being under anesthesia. She shared an "intrusive fear-based thought" of waking up alone, but added that this fear was unfounded as she woke surrounded by close friends. "I think that it really drove home that a family is always what you make it," she stated.
The congresswoman first announced she was freezing her eggs on August 8, initiating a series of social media updates. The process occurred during the August recess of the U.S. House of Representatives. Despite facing scrutiny and media attention for sharing her journey, Ocasio-Cortez confirmed her intention to continue sharing more videos covering her recovery and answering final questions. She expressed gratitude for the well wishes from her followers, stating they "made an impact."
