Alex Rodriguez Calls for Philosophy Change After Yankees' ALDS Sweep
Former Yankees star Alex Rodriguez believes the team needs a fundamental shift in its approach after their American League Division Series elimination.
Following the New York Yankees' sweep by the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series, former Yankees star Alex Rodriguez is advocating for a significant change within the organization, emphasizing a need for a "philosophy change."
During the Fox postgame show, Rodriguez stated, "Something has to change. I’m not talking about personnel, but I’m talking about a philosophy. There has to be a philosophy change. You’ve won 27 titles one way. I’m not saying anyone should lose their job, I’ll make that clear. But [general manager Brian] Cashman has to surround himself with people that know baseball, that understand baseball, that can value both sides of the ball."
Rodriguez expressed concern over the Yankees' lack of lineup and defensive stability, noting that a team facing elimination should not still be grappling with such fundamental questions. He remarked, "It’s unthinkable in a game where your season is on the line, and of the nine positions, you don’t know who’s gonna play five positions — first base, second base, third base, center field, and right field because [Aaron] Judge is out. If something doesn’t change, you’re gonna have the same results. We’ve been watching the same movie for over a decade, and nothing changes."
These sentiments echo those of Yankees captain Aaron Judge, who watched the series conclusion from the dugout due to a calf strain. Judge commented, "We’re the Yankees. I feel like [the front office] should go all in and do what they need to do. If we’ve got holes, if it’s finding certain players, whatever we need … They give us a winning team every year. That’s not good enough in New York."
General Manager Brian Cashman has previously indicated that manager Aaron Boone is likely to return for the next season, stating, "I think Boone’s a really good manager. We’re here for a reason. There’s a lot of reasons behind that. And he’s certainly part of that."
The team faces numerous roster decisions in the upcoming offseason, with several position players like Jazz Chisholm Jr., Trent Grisham, Paul Goldschmidt, and Amed Rosario eligible for free agency. Closer David Bednar is also set to hit the open market. Beyond the shortstop position, where George Lombard Jr. is a prospect, the infield presents many questions. The club also faces uncertainty regarding the future availability of designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton due to his injury history.
