Alert Neighbor Foils Alleged Iran-Linked Terror Plot Targeting US Base in UK
Suspicious activity reported by a local resident led to the arrest of suspects carrying explosives near RAF Fairford, a base used by U.S. bombers.
A potential terror plot targeting a British airbase used by U.S. bombers was reportedly thwarted by the vigilance of a local resident who alerted authorities to suspicious activity.
Three vans were observed en route to RAF Fairford in southwest England early Sunday morning by a resident of the nearby village of Whelford, Gloucestershire. The unidentified woman noticed individuals “hanging around” two vans and contacted law enforcement, describing their behavior as suspicious and noting they did not appear to be locals.
Armed police responded to the alert and discovered the vans were allegedly “packed with explosives.” A neighbor recounted to The Sun that the woman's quick thinking may have “saved a lot of lives.”
Following the discovery, approximately 85 homes within a 400-yard radius of the base were evacuated as investigations commenced. British authorities are reportedly examining the incident as a potential Iran-backed plan aimed at targeting American service members stationed at RAF Fairford. The base serves as a staging ground for U.S. air operations, including strikes against Iran.
Images released by authorities show suspects being apprehended at gunpoint and a bomb disposal robot at the scene. While details remain under investigation, the incident highlights the role of community awareness in counter-terrorism efforts.
