Electricity bills in Alderney will be subsidized for the remainder of the year if the price of crude oil surpasses $100 per barrel. The current price of crude oil stands at $99.76, according to the Financial Times.
The States of Guernsey announced it would allocate £200,000 to Alderney Electricity (AEL) to help offset rising energy costs for the island's 2,167 residents. The Policy and Finance Committee approved the temporary subsidy to mitigate the financial impact of short-term global price increases on local consumers.
Jeannie Cameron, chair of the committee, stated that the funds will be directly applied to customer bills. "The recent rise in global oil prices has the potential to place additional financial pressure on households and businesses at a time when many are already managing increased costs," Cameron said. "This temporary measure provides a level of protection against exceptional fuel price increases while ensuring that public funds are only used where they are genuinely needed."
Unlike its sister islands, Guernsey and Jersey, Alderney does not receive electricity from France via cable. Instead, diesel fuel is required to generate power on the island. Cameron noted that the subsidy is intended to complement, not replace, AEL's ongoing efforts to secure competitive wholesale fuel procurement arrangements.
