A rift has emerged within New York's Democratic Party following a statement by the Young Democrats of Albany County accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The declaration, issued by the group's executive board on September 3, has been met with strong condemnation from state party officials and local Democratic leaders.

"Let us make this crystal clear: Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israeli government has committed a genocide in Gaza and gross violations of international law against the Palestinian people," the Young Democrats' statement read. The statement did not reference the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths, including over 800 civilians and many attendees of a music festival.

The Young Democrats expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, stating, "We recognize the importance of making our position clear, and stand firmly in solidarity with young Democrats across America in fighting for the Palestinian people." They also called for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel, referring to it as a "blank check."

State Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs denounced the statement as a "smear" and a false accusation against Israel. Jacobs, who is Jewish and a descendant of Holocaust survivors, stated that the conflict is a response to Hamas's October 7 attack and that Israel faces an existential threat. He disagreed with the characterization of genocide, acknowledging that "reprehensible things happen" in war but asserting that Israel is not intentionally seeking to eliminate Gaza's civilian population.

"Genocide it is not," Jacobs told The Post. "In war, reprehensible things happen. Wars are not neat things without unintended consequences." He further stated that the Young Democrats' statement fails to account for "the reality, the existential threat to Israel."

Gary Greenberg, a former member of the Albany County Democratic Committee for 25 years, accused the Young Democrats of supporting Hamas and promoting anti-Jewish sentiment. "They're basically supporting the policies of Hamas. That's who the Palestinians are," Greenberg said, adding, "It's a vile rant against the Jewish community. It's a Jew hatred statement."

Jacobs characterized the Albany Young Democrats' stance as an "outlier" within the broader party committee. He conceded that there is room for legitimate criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, such as the issue of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, but maintained that the actions do not constitute genocide. The New York State Young Democrats, which does not have the Israel-Gaza conflict in its platform, has not yet commented on the controversy.
