Albanian Police Clash with Protesters in Eighth Day of Unrest

Albanian police deployed tear gas and water cannons on Tuesday to disperse demonstrators in the capital, Tirana, marking the eighth consecutive day of violent anti-government protests. The unrest, initially fueled by students demanding lower tuition fees, increased state investment in education, and protesting corruption, has broadened into a wider movement calling for the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Throughout the week, protesters have engaged in clashes with police, hurling rocks, flares, firebombs, and fireworks. Law enforcement has responded with batons, water cannons, and tear gas in the city center. This situation in Albania mirrors broader unrest across Europe, where rising fuel costs, dissatisfaction with public services, and housing crises have spurred demonstrations in countries like France and Italy.

Prime Minister Rama addressed the situation, stating, "A wave of stones, an attempt to overthrow the government and change those in power through the imposition of violence — something that will never be allowed to happen, in any form or for any reason." He argued that while concerns about the cost of living, housing, and future opportunities are real, the protests are being exploited by individuals promoting violence and political extremism.

"This is a hybrid war that naturally works to the extent that it does because it is based on real concerns, not fantasies," Rama said, accusing protesters of creating a "climate of terror" in the city. He specifically identified students involved as belonging to "emerging currents of political extremism."

Albania's current protests are also occurring in the context of ongoing demonstrations organized by the Flamingo movement. These rallies have targeted a significant luxury tourism development on the country's southern coast, linked to an investment firm founded by Jared Kushner, a former advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump.
