Albanese Shares Selfie With Trump During UN Assembly

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with former U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday in New York City, sharing a selfie of the encounter on social media.

"Always good to catch up with @POTUS. We spoke tonight on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly," Albanese posted on X, formerly Twitter. The meeting occurred during the UN General Assembly, where global leaders convene.

The interaction comes as the Trump administration has expressed concerns about Australia's proposed digital duty of care reforms and its broader approach to online regulation.

Earlier on Tuesday, Albanese defended his government's social media policies, stating his pride in the reforms pursued by the Labor party. He also highlighted similar actions taken internationally, including recent announcements from the European Union and online safety measures being pursued by more than 20 other countries.

This marks the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since their White House discussion in October of the previous year.

Following the post, some social media users criticized Albanese, with comments focusing on domestic Australian issues such as the economy, inflation, border control, and fuel prices, questioning the relevance of the selfie. One user asked if Albanese would raise fuel prices with Trump, while another questioned Trump's recognition of Albanese.

Albanese's meeting with Trump took place shortly after Trump addressed the UN General Assembly, during which he criticized international efforts to regulate artificial intelligence.
