Albanese: Dirt Sheet on Haines Was About Her 'Integrity'

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that a document circulated by his office concerning independent MP Helen Haines was intended to demonstrate her electoral integrity, not to launch a personal attack. The Prime Minister's comments came as Haines remained in critical condition following an alleged assault.

The document, which did not allege wrongdoing by Haines, was distributed by Albanese's office to journalists shortly after Haines criticized a $6 million grant awarded to Marrickville Golf Club in Sydney. The material raised questions about Haines's stance on the grant and suggested lines of inquiry regarding funding requests in her electorate of Indi.

During an ABC Radio Sydney interview, Albanese rejected the notion that the document constituted a personal attack. "Let's be very clear because apparently it's been published somewhere. It's a list of funding from Helen Haines, just showing that people of integrity stand up for their electorate," he said. "There is no personal criticism of Helen. Helen is a strong advocate for her electorate. She's advocated for funding for projects in her electorate."

Labor sources have argued that it was hypocritical for Haines to criticize the government's grant allocations while simultaneously seeking funding for projects within her own constituency. This perspective contrasts with Albanese's recent calls for a more respectful political culture, particularly in light of the alleged attack on Haines.

Albanese described Haines as an "intelligent, diligent local MP" and praised her husband's "extraordinary bravery" following the incident. Haines lost both her legs after allegedly being pinned against her vehicle and struck by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her Wangaratta electorate office on Monday.

Albanese also disclosed that a "double-digit" number of individuals are currently facing court proceedings over alleged threats made against him. He noted a significant increase in security measures required for his role, contrasting it with periods when he served as a senior minister and opposition leader. "At the moment, there are multiple, like, double-digit figures of people before courts for threats made just against myself," he stated.

The Prime Minister also voiced support for greater obligations on social media companies to remove threatening content, asserting that platforms should be held accountable for hosting such material. "I think they need to have a responsibility to take anything down like that. Yes, that is my view," Albanese said.
