Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke on the phone overnight, marking the first discussion between the two leaders since March.
The call occurred in the early hours of Friday morning. While details of the conversation remain scarce, it follows recent trade disputes between the two nations.
Weeks prior, Australia was subjected to a new 12.5 percent tariff imposed by the Trump administration. This action came after the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated earlier, larger tariffs enacted by the President against trading partners.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, led by Jamieson Greer, stated that Australia had "inadequately enforced bans on goods produced by forced labour." In response, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles described the new levies as making "no sense," asserting that Australia possesses some of the world's most stringent laws against the importation of goods made with forced labor.
