Alaska Toddler Orphaned After Head-On Collision Kills Parents
A two-year-old girl survived a fatal car crash on Parks Highway that claimed the lives of her mother and father.
An Alaska toddler has been orphaned after surviving a head-on car collision that killed both her mother and father.
Sasha Hart, 38, and her husband, David Hart, 41, died in the crash on Parks Highway near milepost 115 in Trapper Creek, Alaska, around 9 a.m. on October 19. Their two-year-old daughter, Paige, survived the accident with six broken bones. The family has described Paige's survival as a "miracle."
According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, Sasha Hart was operating a black 2018 Subaru Forester traveling south on Parks Highway when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound white 2008 Ford F-250.
Paige was initially taken to Mat-Su hospital in Anchorage and has since been transferred for further treatment. She is reported to be in stable condition.
Sasha and David Hart had recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. Shery Elterman-Hart, David's sister, told KTUU that Sasha "just became one of us" and blended well into their family, which honored both Sasha's Jamaican background and David's Alaskan heritage.
Katie Ragsdale, another sibling of David's, described the couple as devoted parents whose daughter was their "entire world." Family members noted that Paige's personality and mannerisms, such as her facial expressions and sweet tooth, remind them of her late parents.
Shery Elterman-Hart plans to raise Paige alongside her own two children. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support Paige's medical expenses and future needs. The fundraiser description states that the family is facing "an overwhelming amount of grief, uncertainty, and urgent need."
The GoFundMe has raised nearly $30,000 towards its $35,000 goal.
