Alaska Senate Candidate Mary Peltola, Family Injured in Car Crash

Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola and her family suffered minor injuries Saturday in a car crash while en route to a campaign event, her campaign announced. The accident occurred when another vehicle collided with the car transporting Peltola and her family.

Peltola, who is of Alaska Native heritage and previously served as a congresswoman, is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. She aims to become the first Democrat in nearly two decades to represent Alaska in the Senate. Both candidates have focused on garnering support from Alaska Native voters, a critical demographic in the closely watched race.

According to her campaign manager, Cheryl Bruce, Peltola was in "good spirits" after the incident. However, her medical providers advised her to postpone campaign events scheduled for Sunday and Monday to allow for recovery.

The incident caused a delay in Peltola's "Alaska Always Tour," an eight-stop campaign initiative planned for the final week before Election Day. Her campaign stated that she is expected to resume her public appearances on Tuesday with a stop in Homer, Alaska.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump held a rally in support of Sullivan. Trump has also stated that he instructed his administration to sue to block the certification of the election results if Sullivan loses. This action is reportedly related to concerns about confusion regarding another candidate listed on the ranked-choice ballot as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.
