Alan Ritchson Details Alleged Extortion Plot Leading to Suicide Attempt

Actor Alan Ritchson, known for his role in the action series "Reacher," has shared a personal account of a difficult period in his life, stating that an alleged blackmail plot by a former business associate resulted in him experiencing depression and attempting suicide. Ritchson recounted the experience during a recent appearance at FAN EXPO Canada.

According to Ritchson, the incident occurred when he was in his mid-30s. He claims a former business partner threatened to accuse him of rape if he did not meet her at a hotel in Cannes, France. Ritchson stated that he was selling a film for her company at the time, which he managed, and described the threat as blackmail. He refused to comply with the demand, choosing instead to hire legal counsel.

"I'm a suicide survivor," Ritchson said during the event. He explained that the situation left him feeling overwhelmed by uncertainty and depression, describing it as the first time he had experienced such feelings.

The actor recounted that he "lost everything" in the business relationship, with his partner allegedly tanking their ventures and causing him significant financial loss. Compounding the stress, Ritchson stated, was the constant threat looming over him. Although he eventually won a settlement through legal action, he felt he had lost something more valuable.

"I didn't win anything because what I was left with was this uncertainty about what happens in life when you do good, you know, and like when you try your hardest," Ritchson explained. He described feeling helpless and profoundly broken by the experience, to the point where he considered suicide a potential "gift" to his family to spare them further fallout.

Ritchson did not name the former business partner. The actor is also navigating a personal life change, having recently announced his separation from his wife, Catherine, after 20 years of marriage. The couple shared the news in a joint Instagram statement, noting they would "continue alongside one another in a different way." Ritchson and Catherine, who met as teenagers and married in 2006, have three sons: Calem, Edan, and Amory.

Before his leading role in "Reacher," Ritchson had notable roles in "Smallville," "Blue Mountain State," "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," and "Titans."
