Actors Alan Cumming and Shirley Henderson have channeled their four-decade-long friendship into a new theatrical production titled "History of Paper." The collaboration, which reunites the acclaimed performers, mines the depth of their personal connection to inform their on-stage dynamic.

Cumming and Henderson have known each other for 40 years, a history that informs their portrayal of characters on stage. "It's just easy to be with Alan," Henderson commented, highlighting the natural chemistry between them. Cumming echoed this sentiment, stating, "We have a good chemistry. We don't over analyse it."

The nature of their performances involves navigating intense emotions, even in lighter moments. Cumming described the experience as a "roller coaster of emotions," noting that even happy scenes can evoke a desire to cry. Henderson added that the performances are inherently moving, comparing the feeling to the arrival of the first snow – a mix of tenderness and rawness.

The actors' comfort with each other allows for a shared sense of purpose before each performance. "I come to see you before the show, each night," Cumming said, "and I say, 'let's have fun.' If we can, because it's terrifying."

This collaborative spirit and the foundation of a long-standing friendship are central to their current project, allowing them to create a performance that is both emotionally resonant and convincingly authentic.
