Residents of Harvest, Alabama, a rural community northwest of Huntsville, are experiencing a persistent cloud of brown dust that has coated their homes and outdoor areas for approximately two years. The dust originates from a nearby housing development construction site.
Homeowners report that the dust layers are so thick they are unable to utilize their patios or lawns. Clarence Johnson, a homeowner and pastor, told WHNT that the construction equipment has kicked up dirt that has settled on his property, including his patio furniture, which he described as "destroyed." Johnson stated that he and his wife have been unable to fully enjoy their property due to the conditions.
Johnson believes the construction project is not adhering to local codes and regulations. He has lodged complaints with officials in both the City of Huntsville and Limestone County, as his home is situated on the border between the two jurisdictions. While officials have acknowledged his concerns, Johnson claims no remedial action has been initiated or is currently planned.
Contact with the construction company, Athens-based Grayson Carter & Son Contracting, has also yielded no resolution. Johnson reported reaching out to the company to assess the damage and seek advice, but stated the call "just didn’t go anywhere" and the company has not offered assistance. He also noted that an estimate to power-wash his home and outdoor furniture exceeded $1,000, an expense he believes residents should not bear.
In addition to the pervasive dust, a large dirt mound on the construction site adjacent to Johnson's property has created drainage problems. During rainfall, water becomes trapped behind the mound, leading to yard flooding. Johnson has expressed his commitment to continuing to seek action despite what he considers an insufficient response from all parties involved.
