Al Roker Explains Abrupt 'Today' Show Departure Due to Jury Duty

Al Roker has addressed his sudden disappearance from NBC's "Today" show, clarifying that his mid-broadcast exit on a recent Monday morning was due to jury duty. The beloved weatherman, 72, left the program unexpectedly, prompting co-anchor Savannah Guthrie to inform viewers that Roker had "had to leave a little bit early."

His absence in the show's subsequent hours also led to speculation, with co-host Craig Melvin stating that Roker "had to step out for just a little bit. He’ll be back tomorrow." Social media users expressed concern, with one posting on X, "I hope he's okay."

Roker later took to Instagram to explain the situation, posting a short video clip from outside a New York City courthouse. "Well, I got out of the Today show early because I've got jury duty. It's everyone's civic duty," he said.

He subsequently updated fans in a comment, revealing that he had secured a postponement of his jury service until December, when his work schedule is typically lighter. Roker expressed his positive view of jury duty, stating, "I LOVE jury duty. I know I am fortunate that my company pays me while I’m serving in a jury. Not everyone has that luxury. Doing your civic duty should NOT be a hardship."

Roker has been open about past health challenges, including a significant health scare in 2022 involving blood clots and internal bleeding, which required emergency surgery. In 2020, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which was successfully treated with surgery. He also underwent bariatric surgery in 2001, which led to substantial weight loss, and has since maintained a healthier lifestyle, sharing his passion for fitness and regular workouts.
