A significant failure within the air traffic control system has resulted in widespread travel disruptions, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and leading to chaotic scenes at airports worldwide. The outage, which impacted flights, caused numerous cancellations and lengthy delays, forcing many travelers to spend unplanned nights in airports and hotels.

Reports from affected airports described scenes of disorder, particularly in baggage reclaim areas. One passenger, Phil White, characterized the situation as "carnage" when luggage from multiple cancelled flights was consolidated onto a single carousel. He noted that approximately a thousand people were attempting to retrieve their belongings, creating a crowded and heated environment.

"The baggage hall was the worst and they're very lucky that there wasn't any sort of incident as tempers frayed and the concourse was getting hotter," White stated.

Passengers attempting to return to the UK faced significant challenges, with some describing their experiences as "a nightmare." Sukie Perera, from Cardiff, was stuck in Turkey and reported poor communication at the airport. She anticipates being unable to fly home until Thursday.

Others described sleeping on the floors of airport terminals and hotel conference rooms. Paul Willows, who was in Rhodes, Greece, with his family, recounted sleeping on the floor of a hotel conference room after being displaced from sunbeds. "I dare say there were about 80 of us on the floor," he said, noting that despite the discomfort, there was a "good element of pulling together" among those affected.

Alan Jones and Kelly Fewery reported being "absolutely exhausted" after sleeping on the floor of Dalaman Airport in Turkey without blankets or pillows. The widespread disruption highlighted the fragility of air travel infrastructure and the significant impact system failures can have on a global scale.
