Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson fell 170 feet during a fast-rope demonstration at the Alamodome.
Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a decorated Air Force veteran, died after falling 170 feet from the rafters of the Alamodome during a pre-game demonstration at a University of Texas at San Antonio football game on October 21, 2026. The incident occurred ahead of the game between UTSA and Navy as part of a "Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans" event.
Witnesses reported that Patterson, assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, at Joint Base San Antonio, slipped while rappelling from the stadium's roof. The demonstration involved four military personnel executing a fast-rope maneuver. Thousands of fans and performers were present and witnessed the fall, which led to an immediate silence throughout the stadium.
Nellis Air Force Base confirmed Patterson's identity and his service affiliation.
