Air Force Sergeant Killed in Football Game Fall Identified as Father of Two

Tech Sergeant Ian Patterson, a decorated U.S. Air Force member with over 15 years of service, has been identified as the individual who died after falling approximately 150 feet during a stunt at a college football game on Saturday. The incident occurred during the Navy-University of Texas at San Antonio game.

Patterson was described as a "beloved husband and father whose life was taken far too soon" in a GoFundMe campaign established to support his family. The fundraiser notes that his sudden death has been "earth-shattering" for his loved ones. His wife, Nikki, who dedicated herself to raising their two sons, is now faced with the challenge of supporting her children while grieving the loss of her partner, who was the primary financial provider.

Video footage of the incident showed Patterson losing his grip on a rope as he rappelled from the stadium rafters, resulting in a fatal fall. Emergency responders treated him on the field for about 10 minutes before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs confirmed his death and stated that the incident is under investigation.

At the time of his death, Patterson was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. This unit specializes in advanced skills training for special warfare Airmen. His military career included previous assignments in South Korea and Germany. Patterson received numerous accolades during his 15 years in the Air Force, including the Air and Space Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air and Space Achievement Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal.
