Aikman's Free Agency Looms as ESPN Faces Potential Booth Upheaval
Troy Aikman has not denied reports of an argument with broadcast partner Joe Buck, and his contract status with ESPN remains uncertain.
Reports of discord between ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcasting duo, Troy Aikman and Joe Buck, have intensified following Aikman's comments on his future with the network. Aikman did not refute claims of an argument with Buck that reportedly occurred before their broadcast on Monday night.
Aikman stated on Thursday that he will be a free agent at the end of the NFL season. "There’s probably a time and a place for all that. I don’t know if now is the time," Aikman said when asked about the reported tension. "I don’t know if it’s hard to figure out kind of what happened. I’ll broadcast through this season and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I’m looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that and where my next landing spot may be."
This situation places ESPN in a precarious position. Aikman and Buck have been partners for nearly three decades, and their pairing is seen by many as one of the network's few recent successes. A separation would be a significant decision for the network, especially as Buck recently signed a contract extension with ESPN, while Aikman's contract has not yet been renewed.
Several potential landing spots for Aikman have been speculated should he depart ESPN. Amazon Prime, which features Kirk Herbstreit, has an out-clause that could allow them to pursue a high-profile talent like Aikman. The vacant seat at CBS alongside Jim Nantz, currently filled by JJ Watt for this season, is another possibility. Netflix, an increasing player in NFL broadcasting, could also be a contender, though the number of games it offers might be a factor.
Beyond broadcasting, there is also the possibility that Aikman could move into an NFL front office role. He has previous experience in this area, having assisted with the hiring of a new general manager for the Dolphins earlier this past offseason.
