AI's Growing Role in MLB: Max Muncy Details Its Impact
Dodgers' third baseman Max Muncy reveals how teams are leveraging artificial intelligence to gain a competitive edge.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into Major League Baseball, with teams adopting AI programs to enhance their strategies, according to Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy.
In a recent discussion on Foul Territory, Muncy stated that AI's presence in the sport is becoming more pronounced. "I think [AI] is becoming way more and more prevalent. I’ve heard of a couple of teams starting to use AI programs," Muncy said. He explained that these programs can analyze pitch data and identify subtle differences in pitcher mechanics, such as glove and hand positioning, information that can be relayed to coaches on the field. "You plug in pitches and the AI program points differences on where the glove is and hand position. That’s what you have been beginning to see with first and third base coaches."
While the Dodgers are not currently implementing AI into their game plans, Muncy acknowledged that technological advancements are driving professional sports teams to explore new methods. The potential for AI to influence outcomes, especially in high-stakes situations like the postseason, is a significant development. The article notes an instance where the Milwaukee Brewers appeared to deduce a pitcher's breaking ball, leading to a critical play. This raises the question of whether AI played a role in their ability to decipher the pitch.
