AI Robot Explores NYC Park to Learn Human Interaction
A $89,000 humanoid robot from Faraday Future was seen in Brooklyn Bridge Park, observed by its operator as it interacted with the public.
An artificial intelligence-powered humanoid robot was observed in Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sunday, engaging with the public as part of its development process. The robot, costing $89,000, is designed to learn human behavior, interaction, and nurturing capabilities, with the ultimate goal of serving as a potential babysitter, teacher, or companion.
According to Hong Rao, Chief Technology Officer for the California-based company Faraday Future, he was operating the robot with a remote control during its outing. The robot, still in its learning and development stages, relies on real-world experiences and human interaction to improve its intelligence, movement, and navigation abilities.
During its time in the park, the robot interacted with various individuals, including singing to children and dancing with parkgoers. Many bystanders appeared unfazed by the life-sized bot, with some posing for photographs alongside it against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. Video footage showed the robot observing its surroundings and engaging in activities such as dancing.
This appearance follows a similar sighting in March, where another AI robot was seen interacting with children in the same park. The deployment of advanced AI and robotics in public spaces comes at a time when discussions around their societal impact are intensifying. Notably, a Nobel Prize-winning AI expert recently cautioned Congress about the need for humans to coexist with increasingly sophisticated AI, warning of potential existential risks.
