Tuya Smart has introduced Doova, a wheeled AI robot designed to assist seniors who wish to continue living independently. Unveiled at IFA 2026 in Berlin, the robot aims to provide a layer of safety and companionship by responding to calls for assistance and connecting family members through live video during emergencies.

Doova utilizes LDS LiDAR for navigation and a four-microphone system to pinpoint the source of a voice. Its AI vision capabilities can analyze a person's skeletal posture. If a senior says, "Hey Tuya, help," the robot navigates to the individual to assess the situation. According to Tuya, if the user does not respond within 60 seconds, Doova initiates an emergency response workflow that alerts family members and initiates a two-way live video call. The company has not yet stated whether Doova can automatically detect falls without a verbal cue or if it directly contacts emergency services.

Beyond emergency response, Doova is intended to serve as an AI companion. It features a multimodal large language model allowing for natural conversations. The robot can play entertainment, assist with understanding bills or letters, and is designed to identify potential scam risks. However, users are advised not to rely solely on the AI for verifying the legitimacy of financial requests or communications.

Doova can also support daily routines by providing medication reminders, tracking schedules, and offering weather updates. Tuya plans to implement a feature to help locate misplaced items within the home. Furthermore, the robot can function as a mobile home-monitoring device, performing 360-degree scans from central locations within rooms and sending safety reports to the user's phone. It can also return to its charging dock autonomously when its battery is low.

Significant privacy concerns have been raised regarding Doova's use of microphones, AI vision, and live video within a home environment, as well as its ability to learn user preferences. Specific details on where video and audio data are processed, stored, who can access it, and options for data deletion are not yet fully outlined by Tuya. Until these privacy controls are clarified, potential users are cautioned to carefully consider the implications of introducing a camera-equipped AI robot into a loved one's home.

Doova is also designed to act as a smart home controller, allowing seniors to adjust connected lights or curtains and interact with compatible kitchen and bathroom devices through voice commands. The robot features a 10.1-inch HD display with animated facial expressions and a design intended to be approachable.

Tuya Smart has not yet announced a retail price or a release date for Doova. Real-world testing will be crucial to determine the robot's reliability in various home environments, including navigating obstacles like rugs and cords, and its effectiveness during actual emergencies. The company did not respond to requests for comment regarding Doova's emergency response, privacy protections, connectivity, and availability before the deadline.

The Doova robot represents a shift towards AI assistants that can physically move within a home. While it offers the potential for enhanced safety and connection for seniors aging in place, thorough examination of its emergency protocols, internet dependency, data collection practices, and user comfort is advised before adoption.
